Freedom Harness Sizing Chart and Measuring Instructions
Use a soft measuring tape and measure all around the largest part of your dog's chest. The tape should wrap just behind their front legs. Refer to the size chart below and choose the smallest size that will fit your dog.
For example, if your dog's chest measurement is 28", we would recommend that you select the Medium size, so that the straps in front would fit better.
If your dog is between sizes, we recommend choosing the next size up.
Note: The 5/8" Medium and 1" Medium both fit the same measurement range. The 5/8" sizes are for smaller dogs (under 40lbs/18kgs, e.g. Daschunds, Italian Greyhounds, Whippets, Jack Russel Terriers, Beagles, etc); the 1" sizes are for larger dogs (40lbs/18kgs and over, e.g. Labrador Retrievers, Golden Retrievers, Geryhounds, etc.)

Measurements for dog harnesses and collars would vary between different companies. For example, a large-sized dog harness from Company A could be considered a medium-size from Company B.Ā
Several points to consider when choosing a harness for your dog
Purpose: Is your dog a puller or escape artist? Dogs tend to choke when they pull against collars, and such pressure on their throats could cause damage and lead to breathing difficulties. Harnesses could help with training and provide greater safety and comfort for your dog, as they distribute the pulling pressure across their chests (a larger, less sensitive area) instead of the throat.
Your Dog's Weight: This can help determine the harnesses that can withstand wear-and-tear. The larger your dog, the greater the pulling force. Some harnesses, when pushed over their weight limit, could break while your dog is pulling. Rest assured that the Freedom No-pull harness has been tested to pull up to 3800 lbs (over 1700kgs), meaning they won't break or fray no matter how hard your dog pulls!
How to Know Your Dog's Harness Fits Correctly
Your dog's harness is not fitting properly if:
- They can step out or wiggle out of the harness
- There is chafing under their armpits or around harness contact points
- There is loss of fur/hair around harness contact points
- The chest strap loosens during walks
- The back piece droops/rotates to the side
If your dog is resistant to walking while wearing the harness, or puts up a fight when getting the harness on, it could be that the harness does not fit right!
